What God says about being a Christian

  • God desires to have a personal relationship with us, but because we are sinners, we reject Him.  All people are born in a state of separation and estrangement from God.  We are sinners.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

Romans 3:10/11 There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God

Romans 3:23 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

You are a sinner.  To be a Christian, you must accept this as truth from God, and admit you are a sinner.

  • The consequence of sin is eternal separation and estrangement from God, and an
eternity in the Lake of Fire and Brimstone, otherwise known as Hell.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death. (eternal separation from God)

Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Since you are a sinner, there is nothing you can do to escape this separation or to gain access to God.  The debt is infinitely too great. To be a Christian, you must accept this as truth from God, and admit your inability to save yourself.

  • Because people can never reach God or pay the debt of sin, He reached down to them in love by offering His Son, Jesus Christ, as a perfect sacrifice for all sin. This was accomplished when He was crucified in Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. In an act of acceptance of the sacrifice made by Jesus, God raised Him from the dead 3 days later, providing victory over death.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God loves you and desires to have a personal relationship with you.  To be a Christian, you must accept this as truth from God, and believe Jesus died for you, personally.

  • Having satisfied the legitimate demand of a Holy God by offering His Own shed blood as payment for the sin of all people, Jesus purchased forgiveness of sin and freedom from sin's eternal penalty. He offers that forgiveness and freedom as a free gift to anyone who will accept it on faith alone. Forgiveness of sin and freedom from sin's eternal penalty is not available or accessible by good works, sacraments, or any other way. It is received by faith alone, apart from any human effort.

Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven give to men by which we must be saved.

Acts 16:31 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved

Faith in Jesus Christ is your only way to Heaven and your only escape from Hell.  To be a Christian, you must accept this as truth from God, and admit any attempts on your part to earn or deserve this gift are useless.
